Chapter Nineteen

Brandon

I don’t know where the demon has taken her, but I know Ally is in fatal danger. The feeling of helplessness takes me straight back to that night three years ago when I lost the woman I was hopelessly in love with.

That the demon took Ally with the intent of spilling her blood chills me to the bone. He has to kill the possessor of The Heart to bring hell to earth. He took her away to avoid falling foul of my magic. He’s winning. And I’ve lost the woman I know for certain I was fated to be with. This can’t be happening. I tug at my hair as I try to think. All I can see when I close my eyes is Ally. She’s my soul-mate. There has to be a way to find her…

My eyes snap open, my thoughts spinning. In that moment I realize something that wrenches me out of my worry; no matter where he has taken her I will be able to track her. Dimensions can cause problems with regular locator spells. Generally, if someone has been shifted through space and time there’s no way to track them down with any kind of accuracy. Hence, why the demon has been so difficult to pin down to destroy. But there’s a bond between Ally and I—we are soul-mates—and I can use that bond to find her. I conjure a map that takes our dimensional situation into consideration, and the correct crystal for the spell. I only have to hold the purple stone for a few seconds before it glows. Spreading the map out on the forest ground, I let go of the crystal and it moves over the paper, hovering a few inches above. It falls down over the Between Place, a sort of limbo where demon trackers and humans can be transported to by demons in certain instances.

No one ever comes back from there. At least, no one that I’ve ever heard of. He couldn’t have picked a worse place to take her. Trackers have been known to return from Hell, but never from the Between Place. There’s no data on it, nothing that could tell me what to expect when I get there. All I know is that it may be close to impossible to leave.

But that’s not the worst part. The worst thing is that it’s a difficult place to get to. I won’t be able to get there on my own, at least not without making a less than appealing request of someone who may not agree to help first. I realize I’m chewing on my lip when I make my decision to start moving back toward the witch’s house. It’s not ideal, but I absolutely need the blood of a demon to take me to where Ally is. As loathe as I am to admit it, Cole is my best bet.
